Stormshield environmental approach, to face the energy consumption of IT solutions

A reduction in the environmental impact of products

Every year, worldwide, the energy consumed by IT solutions increases. Aware of this major social challenge, Stormshield is taking the first steps towards a sustainable eco-design approach to preserve our planet. Because Stormshield equipment protects you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, its energy efficiency is of paramount importance.

Year after year, requirements become increasingly stringent, as shown by the DoE (Department of Energy) standard in the United States and the European Commission’s code of conduct. These standards provide a framework for our environmental strategy and are taken into account from the start of the specifications stage, during the development of our products. In parallel with technical advances in terms of energy consumption, they enable us to improve the efficiency of the external power supplies used mainly on Stormshield Network Security firewalls (the only physical boxes at Stormshield).

Compliance with the REACH certificate. The REACH regulation ensures security in the manufacture and use of chemical substances in industry in the European Economic Area. Stormshield’s hardware laboratory works in partnership with its manufacturers to use only products that are authorised by these European regulations.

WEEE and SNS products recycling

Ever since the European Union adopted a requirement to recycle Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), computer waste has its own recycling channel. As a producer of IT equipment, Stormshield is responsible for removing and processing WEEE waste.

This commitment takes the form of a strong focus on the product return policy in particular. To facilitate electronic equipment recycling, products are shipped and stored in a single location and then sent on to an after-sales service provider (France and Germany) responsible for their reconditioning. In this case, parts subject to wear and tear are systematically replaced (fans, hard disks, motherboard battery, power supplies, etc.). The product thus starts a new life cycle with total reliability. End-of-life equipment is handled by centres specialising in the processing of waste for destruction.

You can find the Stormshield Network Security registration number for WEEE compliance in the UK below: WEE/AF0079UU.

Compliance with the RoHS directive

What about hazardous substances? The European 2011/65 RoHS directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. Its latest version, RoHS 3, which came into force in 2019, lists 10 hazardous substances subject to restrictions in electrical and electronic equipment:

  • lead;
  • mercury;
  • cadmium;
  • hexavalent chromium;
  • polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs);
  • polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDBEs);
  • bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP);
  • benzyl phtalate and n-butyl phthalate (BBP);
  • dibutyl phthalate (DBP);
  • diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP).

RoHS certificate: Stormshield Network Security fully meets its obligations under the Directive. Contact us to retrieve the RoHS certificate for your Stormshield product.
